‘It's a priority for Ukraine to fulfil seven conditions regarding the membership in the EU’, Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze

The Chair of the Committee on Ukraine's Integration into the EU within the Ukrainian Parliamentary delegation took part in the meeting
of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament. A significant part of the meeting was devoted to the European and global security situation and the situation in Ukraine.

Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze reported on the results of the meeting. The MEPs, she said, are following the situation in Ukraine very carefully and demonstrate leadership in providing Ukraine with the assistance. ‘They were interested in the issue of priorities regarding the weapons, the issue of Russia's responsibility for the crimes in Ukraine and help for Ukraine, but they also asked whether Ukraine is determined to continue the anti-corruption reforms. These reforms are fundamental on the way to the European integration. The MPEs asked open questions about unity in the Ukrainian political community and about the new Presidential Decree restricting trips abroad, including for members of the Ukrainian parliament. This demonstrates that our European colleagues monitor very closely the situation in Ukraine,’ Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze said. According to her, every step of Ukraine, which concerns both the reform agenda and the survival of Ukraine, is now under the close attention.

The Chair of the Committee emphasised that it is a priority for Ukraine to fulfil seven conditions that accompanied the granting of candidate status for joining the EU: ‘We very much hope that a preliminary assessment will be carried out, so that we can correct mistakes or shortcomings that could have been made during the rapid fulfilment of these requirements. It would help us not to lose a historic chance given by the European community, and to be able to achieve a positive assessment in October 2023, which would pave the way for raising a question of negotiations on membership in the EU’. This, however, also requires, according to the Chair of the Committee, additional strengthening of the Parliament’s capacity. Therefore, Ukraine very much hopes that the European Parliament will continue to help strengthening its institutional capacity.

Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze said that without Ukraine's membership in the EU and NATO, there will be no safe Europe. ‘This means that already at the Vilnius summit in July 2023, we should ask questions about the next step in our relations with the Alliance and the possibility of opening the way to our full membership,’ said the Chair of the Committee.
