The Chair of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Ukraine’s Integration into the EU, Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze, together with colleagues from the Ukrainian delegation to the NATO–Ukraine Interparliamentary Council, took part in a special meeting of the European Parliament’s Committee on Security and Defence.
Together with the First Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Oleksandr Korniienko, she also met with members of various political groups represented in the European Parliament — including Social Democrats, Liberals, Conservatives, and Greens — as well as representatives of the EU executive institutions.
At all meetings, discussions focused primarily on Russia’s massive strikes and the genocide it is committing against Ukrainians amid the so-called negotiation process. Participants also addressed humanitarian and energy-related challenges, urgent military needs, as well as further sanctions and coordination of pressure on the aggressor.
“At the same time, many colleagues were interested in the mood of Ukrainians and our resilience under inhumane trials; they asked about the situation with anti-corruption investigations, reforms and the prospects for their advancement; and they were interested in our vision regarding the future conduct of elections,” Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze stated. According to her, most European colleagues clearly understand the need for maximum support to ensure that Ukraine can not only withstand the aggression but also secure a successful future within the European Union.
“In this context, I sought to clarify the grounds for optimism expressed by the Ukrainian leadership regarding EU membership as early as 2027. Even a limited or partial form of EU membership — without voting rights and with restricted access in sectors where reforms are not completed — within such a short timeframe appears, to put it mildly, unlikely,” the Chair of the Committee noted.
In her view, it is therefore important not to create inflated expectations in society but to continue working so that Ukraine can successfully navigate the complex path of European integration.
