Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze: Only force and pressure can persuade Russia to peace

The Chair of the Committee on Ukraine's Integration into the EU, Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze, met with representatives of the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The parties discussed Australia's military support for Ukraine, security, and the political situation in Ukraine.

Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze thanked the Australian delegation for their visit to Ukraine. According to her, such visits help to convey a deeper understanding of what Ukrainians are going through. She welcomed the expansion of the Australian Embassy in Ukraine. In her opinion, this will help to strengthen cooperation between the states.

The Chair of the Committee on Ukraine's Integration into the EU emphasised that while addressing assistance to Ukraine, it is crucial to move from declarations to concrete actions. She is convinced that the West's belief that a ceasefire in Ukraine is close is misleading and unjustified. “Russia’s actions indicate that it wants to continue this war, subjugate the Ukrainian people, and wipe us off the map of the world as a state only because we defend our right to our future,” said Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze. She is confident that the world should not allow Russia’s intentions to be realised, as this would become a dangerous precedent for other dictatorships that seek to replace globally the rule of law with the rule of force. The Chair of the Committee believes that the states that base their policies on values and support Ukraine’s fight for the values of the free world should take concrete and decisive action as soon as possible. “This concerns military and financial support, as well as sanction pressure on the Russian Federation. I do not believe that Russia can be persuaded to peace through negotiations. I am convinced that this can only be done through force and pressure,” stated Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze. She also believes that Russia is trying to use any weakening of unity among Western partners to sow doubt and hostility.

The Chair of the Committee also thanked her Australian colleagues for meeting and working with representatives of different political forces in Ukraine. She noted that on strategic issues, such as the fight against the enemy, as well as the European and Euro-Atlantic integration, the opposition and the pro-government majority are united. At the same time, she said, it is important to hold the authorities accountable on such critical issues as freedom of speech, media freedom and preservation of the checks and balances. Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze is convinced that restrictions on the democratic freedoms of citizens and the rights of the opposition under martial law should not be disproportionate.
