Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze: “The only chance for Ukraine to survive is to win this war”

Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze, Chair of the Committee on Ukraine's Integration into the EU, took part in a public debate on the Euro-Atlantic security architecture and revision of the EU neighbourhood policy. She stressed that the only chance for Ukraine to survive is to win this war, and Ukraine will not be able to do it without the help of the world. Now every nation in the world, every country chooses for itself whether to be on the side of light or on the side of darkness.

“Regarding the EU EaP policy, we all have to admit that this format is dead. It's been dead for a long time. While some countries, such as Ukraine, signed the Association Agreement with the EU, received visa-free travel with the European Union, and others, such as Belarus, Azerbaijan or Armenia, went in the opposite direction”, Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze said. We should not try to revitalize this format. With all respect to our partners, Georgia and Moldova, with whom we formed a tripartite association, we must recognize that the only thing Ukraine really needs now is the membership in the European Union. We understand that there is no accelerated membership procedure. We understand how much doubt and hesitation this raises in the EU member states. We are also aware of how many more important reforms Ukraine needs to implement to achieve this, such as adaptation of legislation, the rule of law, the balance of different branches of the government, quality and safety standards, etc”.

At the same time, according to the Chair of the Committee, Ukraine's candidate status may now be granted on the basis of a quick decision taken by the European Commission and may be supported by the EU member states. If the EU wants to remain a true outpost of democracy, a landmark for societies that believe in democracy and the values of freedom, it should give Ukraine this status.

If the EU is a true representative democracy, its leaders must listen to their citizens 70% of whom support Ukraine's accession to the EU: Poland - 92%, Italy - 71%, Germany - 68%, and France - 62%. This would give us not only a sense that our right for life is respected and protected, but also a sense that our right for the future is also protected.

“I appeal to Moldova and Georgia, which are now trying to use the situation in Ukraine to their advantage. I am grateful to the Georgian people for their support. It is the people, not the government. If Ukraine losses this war, Georgia and Moldova could be next, as coulde the Baltic states or NATO's eastern border. I am convinced that our application for the EU membership should be considered separately from Georgia and Moldova. We are much better prepared, given our progress in implementing the Association Agreement. Georgia and Moldova have the right to be members of the EU, but they have to go their own way”, Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze said.
