Recycle Non-recyclable
The story of Odessa-based eco-project is a very good example of how
Ukrainians use all the advantages of Association Agreement with the
European Union. In our #AASuccessStories column today we introduce you
a very small but very creative eco business “Precious Plastic Ukraine”.
These guys, with the support of the EU project, found the way to
utilize the PET plastic, which is not currently processed in Ukraine.
There are only three people currently involved in this business — the
inventor and founder of “Precious Plastic” Yevhen Khlebnikov, his
assistant Kateryna Marushevska and a volunteer Vlad.
Last fall, according to dumskaya.net, “Precious Plastic” received a
grant support within the EMBLAS EU project.
“We received financial assistance from the EU for the research on
plastic processing, - Yevhen Khlebnikov says. - We’ve calculated the
melting point and processing of plastic, set up the technology and are
ready now to start production process. It was interesting for us to
make something good from completely unusable material. Nobody needs
this material, because this type of plastic is not recyclable in
Ukraine at the moment”.
Most often, they use plastic tableware and PET bottles. On special
equipment it is crushed into crumbs, heated, and then poured into the
special forms to get the object inventors need.
“Precious Plastic” now produces a wide variety of recycled plastic
products: from art objects and decor items to benches and construction
materials. They also managed to establish production of plastic paving
slabs. Yevhen Khlebnikov says that inventors in Ukraine have already
experimented with paving slabs of plastic waste, but they added sand to
its composition. Therefore, the material was not very strong.
Experimenting with texture, “Precious Plastic” made two types of paving
slabs — smooth and rough surface. The first batch is ready and now
Yevhen, together with European researchers from the EMBLAS project, is
looking for a place in Odessa where they could lay these paving slabs
to test it. They plan to lay out an area of 12 square meters to check
the paving slabs quality. If the experience of “Precious Plastic” in
the manufacture of paving slabs is successful, Georgian colleagues who
are also involved in the EMBLAS project will take it up.
EMBLAS (Environmental Monitoring in the Black Sea) is a project of the
European Union, which aims to monitor the Black Sea environment and
find the ways to clean it. One of the directions of the project is the
processing and utilization of plastic waste, which pollutes the Black
Sea.
