Members of the Committee on Ukraine’s Integration into the EU together
with colleagues from other Committees met with the delegation of the U4U
initiative. United for Ukraine is an informal network that unites members
of parliaments from different countries of the world to support Ukraine.
The Chair of the Committee on Ukraine’s Integration into the EU Ivanna
Klympush-Tsintsadze thanked the members of U4U for their support and for
visiting not only Kyiv and other regions of Ukraine. “We are grateful and
appreciate that during this visit you are going not only to Kyiv, but also
to the regions that were occupied and liberated, which are under shelling
every day. I hope this will help to convince your states and societies of
the need for further support to Ukraine”.
Ukrainian MPs emphasised the importance of creating a legislative
framework for the future reconstruction of Ukraine. They noted the
importance of the EU mechanism Ukraine facility, which provides financing
of up to 50 billion euros over four years to support Ukraine. At the same
time, Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze emphasised that the reconstruction needs
of Ukraine significantly exceed this amount. Therefore, it is important to
have a vision of the financial support Ukraine could rely on.
She noted that Ukraine is now focused on completing the fulfilment of the
seven conditions for candidate status. “We hope to receive a positive
assessment from the European Commission, and later also from the European
Council. And that Ukraine will be able to open the membership negotiations
already this year.” The Chair of the Committee also expressed hope that
during the presidency of Belgium in the European Union in the first half
of the next year, Ukraine will remain the focus of the EU's attention. The
parties agreed that it is necessary to intensify inter-parliamentary
diplomacy to keep Ukraine high on the agenda.
