#AASuccessesStories column is about Ukrainians, who in practice
implement the Association Agreement with the EU and enjoy opportunities
for cooperation with the European Union.
Today, the #AASuccessesStories section is about community of
Trostyanets, which got the opportunity to restore a valuable
architectural monument of its region - the estate of Koenig and the
Round Yard. The rehabilitation will be carried out under the financial
support of the European Union.
The Koenig estate is a monument of history and architecture, widely
known not only in Sumy region, but all over Ukraine. The manor includes
three buildings, which are listed in the guide lists as “the main
house”, “the house where the composer Peter Tchaikovsky lived and
worked” and “Round yard”. Peter Tchaikovsky, then a 24-year-old student
at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, was spending his vacations in the
house in summer of 1864. Here he created his first symphonic work - the
overture “Thunderstorm“. The round courtyard is an oval building with
four towers, which combines elements of Gothic and Ukrainian Baroque.
There are three museums in the building. There is an art gallery in the
central two-storey building. In the left wing of the estate there is a
“chocolate museum”. In the right wing there is local history museum.
In 2018, the tender commission at the Ministry of Regional Development
supported the decision to restore the Leopold Koenig estate - the manor
and the fortress of the Round Yard with European grant funds. The grant
amounted to UAH 8.7 million. Community co-financed the project with
about UAH 2 million. Restoration of the monument will allow to attract
more tourists to Trostyanets from all over the country.
Annual cultural events are held in the Round Yard and the Koenig Manor.
This is a festival of historic reenactment “Old Fortress. Journey
through the Centuries”, “Tchaikovsky Fest” — International Classical
Music Festival, “East-Rock“ International Youth Music Festival. These
festivals gather up to 30,000 tourists per season and have become not
only self-sustaining but also profitable.
Trostyanets local authorities say restoring the architectural monument
with the EU support is not the only opportunity the community has used.
“We are constantly looking for various additional external funds, for
which the department of strategic development of the community is
responsible”, — Trostyanets Mayor Yuriy Bova said. — We submit about
100 grant applications a year, and we win 10-15 of them. Last year, we
received UAH 25 million in such a way. This is, first of all, the EU
funds: we received UAH 10 million for the rehabilitation of the
Trostyanets Palace. Last year we received about UAH 8 million for the
creation of a youth educational hub”.
