The Committee on Ukraine's Integration into the EU held an extraordinary meeting on Ukraine's strategic course
At an extraordinary meeting on October 7, members of the Verkhovna Rada
Committee on Ukraine's Integration into the European Union considered
draft No. 6132 of the Verkhovna Rada Resolution on the Statement of the
Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine “On Priority Issues of Ukraine's EU
Integration”, submitted to Parliament by Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze.
The Chair of the Committee noted that the majority of members of the
Committee had joined in signing this Statement. Co-authors are also
members of the Committee on Foreign Policy and Inter Parliamentary
Cooperation. “The next Ukraine-EU summit is being prepared, it is
important to provide a political framework for the priorities of
cooperation between Ukraine and the European Union and to outline
broader opportunities for Ukraine's cooperation with the EU,” Ivanna
Klympush-Tsintsadze said. She also noted that the Statement refers to
the Article in the Constitution of Ukraine, which set out a strategic
course for the EU membership, and identified the key priorities of
relations with the European Union in which Ukraine was interested:
“This applies to security, increasing sanctions on Russia Federation to
restore the territorial integrity of Ukraine, as well as technical
issues, relating to additional access to economic opportunities of the
European Union”.
Based on the results of consideration of the draft Resolution No. 6132,
the Committee decided to recommend to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to
adopt the draft as a basis and as a whole.
The Statement of People's Deputies, in
particular, states that the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine:
• confirms the strategic course of Ukraine for the acquisition of full
membership of Ukraine in the European Union;
• calls for the recognition of Ukraine's EU membership prospects in
accordance with Article 49 of the Treaty on European Union;
• recommends the continued support of the European Union and its Member
States for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine in the
face of Russian aggression and states the importance of maintaining and
strengthening sanctions against Russia;
• calls for the strengthening of sanctions against Russia in connection
with the illegal issuance of passports by Russia to Ukrainian citizens
and the forced involvement of Ukrainian citizens in the elections in
the Russian Federation;
• expresses its gratitude for the support in ensuring Ukraine's access
to safe and effective vaccines against COVID-19 and readiness for
further cooperation in overcoming the COVID-19 pandemic;
• expresses its gratitude to the EU institutions for many years of
technical support to Ukraine for the better implementation of the
EU-Ukraine Association Agreement, as well as for its support for
Ukraine's financial and economic stability.
