The Chair of the Committee on Ukraine’s Integration into the EU met with
the delegation of the European Union Advisory Mission in Ukraine.
Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze thanked the EUAM for supporting reforms in
Ukraine, as well as for effective joint work with the Committee on
Ukraine's Integration into the EU. The European Union Advisory Mission,
together with the Committee, the State Border Guard Service, the State
Customs Service and local authorities visited checkpoints on the western
border of Ukraine. During joint on-site meetings, they discussed the
capacity and infrastructure of checkpoints, the prevention of smuggling
and corruption, as well as reform of the customs system in accordance with
EU provisions.
Rolf Holmbo, Head of the EUAM in Ukraine, noted that the integration of
Ukraine into the EU directly depends on reforms, including in the security
sector. The faster Ukraine implements these reforms, the sooner its
accession to the EU will be possible.
The Chair of the Committee noted that it’s extremely important for Ukraine
to fulfill by mid-September the requirements that accompanied granting it
the status of a candidate for EU accession. It will enable a positive
opinion from European partners at the end of October and start of
negotiations on membership already in December. Next year, the agenda of
the European Union will be significantly affected by the EU elections, so
Ukraine should take advantage of this window of opportunity in 2023.
At the same time, Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze insisted that during martial
law, one should not forget that democracy, the rule of law, freedom of
speech and respect for human rights are key for a country that seeks
membership in the European and Euro-Atlantic community. Compliance with
these democratic principles is among the Copenhagen criteria for EU
membership. “In this war, we are fighting for a right to have a choice and
determine our own future. We want to return to our European family of free
civilized nations. Therefore, it is important for us not to become a
dragon while fighting a dragon,” the Chair of the Committee noted.
The parties agreed to continue cooperation aimed at the implementation of
reforms in Ukraine, in accordance with EU standards and requirements.
The European Union Advisory Mission has been working in Ukraine since
2014. All this time, EUAM Ukraine worked closely with its Ukrainian
counterparts to facilitate a sustainable reform of the civil security
sector, providing strategic advice and support for reform measures in
accordance with EU standards and international principles of good
governance and human rights.
